On July 29, 2008, hundreds of Police Athletic League (PAL) children joined New York Yankee Bobby Abreu at a Police Athletic League Play Street on Coster Street between Lafayette and Spofford Avenues in the Bronx. Youngsters wearing Abreu’s #53 on their PAL t-shirts honored the Yankee slugger for his support and contributions to PAL. Executive Director of PAL, Felix A. Urrutia Jr., along with the children presented Abreu with his own #53 Police Athletic League jersey in recognition of “Bobby Abreu Day” at PAL. PAL’s Play Street Program closes off streets and other public areas throughout New York City to give children safe, supervised places to play. Bobby Abreu’s visit to the Bronx Play Street was reminiscent of the days when professional athletes, like Willie Mays, would spend time on city streets playing sports with children.
"Today, we have the pleasure of welcoming one of the Yankees' great and popular players, Bobby Abreu, to one of our over 100 Play Streets operating throughout the city this summer. We have named this day Bobby Abreu Day in recognition of his support of our programs that help to serve children of the South Bronx and throughout the five boroughs," said Felix A. Urrutia Jr., Executive Director of PAL.
