Help PAL

PAL depends on the generosity and
support of a wide range of volunteers.

Opportunities to volunteer are available in all five boroughs at youth centers, after school, evenings and weekends. Volunteers coach a wide range of sports, tutor children in homework help, assist with high school and college admissions, test preparation, resume writing, job interview techniques, learning crafts and exploring personal hobbies. If you have the time and are willing to make an ongoing commitment to PAL children, please call Phyllis Abkin at 1-800-PAL-4-KIDS or pabkin@palnyc.org.

Program Volunteers

  1. Individual volunteers offer their own personal knowledge and experience in working with children in a variety of ways such as job training, tutoring, educational initiatives, performing arts, crafts or computers. PAL has a great need for tutors in all boroughs. In addition, volunteers may support the Development or Administrative departments at the main office in Manhattan.
  2. Corporate volunteers from companies or corporations may provide support as individuals, in partnerships with fellow employees or in groups. A wide range of opportunities are available. In addition, PAL needs support and participation in special events.

Volunteers are asked to make a two-hour per week commitment. There is a mandatory background check for all volunteer applicants.

PAL also offers a variety of Internship opportunities. For more information, please contact Phyllis Abkin at 1-800-PAL-4-KIDS pabkin@palnyc.org.

Sports Volunteers
  1. Team Coaches with existing teams or individuals interested in developing a team in one of the PAL centers are needed in basketball, baseball/softball, flag football, rookie league ball, track and golf. These teams become part of the PAL leagues. PAL will also accept applications from leagues. A minimum of four teams is required for each league.

There is a mandatory background check, as well as an obligatory training course, for all participating coaches. Several training sessions will be held in each borough prior to each sports season.

Please check Sports for specific details on the individual sport of your choice and the appropriate application.

  2. “Cops and Kids” coaches are part of a special opportunity for Police Officers to work with children from their own precincts. Officers are asked to volunteer a few hours a week to help coach children in the fall golf and winter basketball programs. A minimum of two officers in a precinct is required, but the more the merrier! We currently have 50 precincts involved, and we are looking forward to expanding the program, which is beginning its sixth season of competition.

If you are interested in volunteering with PAL as a Team Coach or Precinct “Cops and Kids” Coach, please contact the Borough Coordinator at (212) 477-9450, ext. 351.

Please feel free to contact the PAL SPORTS DEPARTMENT for details.
