Highlights of the summer
season for PAL youngsters include an International Festival celebrating
cultures worldwide and an end-of-summer Carnival in Central Park
with 6,000 boys and girls that begins with a children’s parade with hand-made
banners from all the Play Streets.
Day Camps
During the summer, PAL youth centers serve as neighborhood Day Camps. These
small groups offer a full range of recreational, educational, cultural and
social activities. Youngsters take enriching field trips to state parks,
museums, libraries and beaches to learn more about the city beyond their
neighborhood. Children develop new skills, discover new talents and gain
confidence in a safe and nurturing atmosphere.
Playstreet Program
PAL’s summer Playstreet Program is the foundation
of PAL’s summer programs. PAL closes off streets and other
public areas throughout New York City to give children safe, supervised
places to play. Playsites offer sports, arts, crafts, games, reading,
music and dance. Mobile reading teachers bring a variety of books to the children to encourage summer reading. Summer playsites serve youngsters in neighborhoods in all five boroughs.
