In-School Training and Employment Program (In-STEP)
PAL’s In-School Training and Employment Program (In-STEP) helps to enable inner-city youth to graduate from high school and introduce them to the world of work. 300 boys and girls participate in the In-STEP program at all of PAL’s full-time centers and four part-time centers. Ranging in age from 14 to 18, students have access to counseling, one-on-one support, after-school employment and job skills training. In-STEP has been partially funded through the Workforce Investment Act (WIA), as well as through private funding.

The curriculum features hands-on learning, independent study, role playing, field trips and career development. Teens explore critical work-related skills such as setting goals, teamwork, problem-solving, brainstorming and effective listening. Young people are guided in self-evaluation through the assessment of strengths and weaknesses, talents and interests. They also act as role models to younger children.

These students also participate in PAL’s Life Skills Training Program designed to help keep youngsters in school, avoid premature pregnancy, and plan for higher education and future careers. The Life Skills Training Program is offered after school and addresses four major themes that teens and adults are faced with everyday including values, politics, finance and sexuality. Activities and exercises are structured to demonstrate life lessons.

Students interested in participating in In-STEP can inquire at a local PAL Center.

Summer Youth Employment Program
PAL focuses on youth employment as a means to success by providing job training, career counseling, placement services and job performance evaluation. In addition, In-STEP youth are given the opportunity and support to develop their leadership abilities within and beyond the PAL centers. Life skills training sessions support teens, as they make the transition from adolescence to adulthood. Over 1,600 youngsters held jobs in each of PAL’s past two Summer Youth Employment Programs.
